Three Years and Counting!

Well,it has now been three years since the UKWRS counter thingummy started running properly.

Despite my many arguments with hosting providers, random database crashes, and some people being really childish, it is still going. Hurrah.

Quick Mobile Broadband Survey

Basically, I’m trying to find out which mobile broadband provider people are using on their boats. I might launch a help page on this soon, so I’m gathering data. So click on the name…

Which Mobile Broadband provider do you use?

Another update to the Ranking Thing

I’ve done some minor fettling of the Ranking site, mainly on the admin side.

The main change is that you can now use the URL http://www.ukwrs.co.uk/ instead of http://www.ukwrs.co.uk/ranking/

Also, there is now a “Like” button for Facebook.
Well, there was until I realised that it wouldn’t format correctly.

Wow.

Slight Ranking System Change

Some changes were done to the user interface of the ranking site this week, just to make it easier to implement the iPhone/Android version that I’m working on. Hopefully nobody noticed.

Situation Update

Since its been a while since I posted anything on here, I thought I’d just do a quick update on what is going on.

While I do realise that I have a massive backlog of map updates to do, I haven’t got the time at the moment.
Plus, having changed my PC (and forgetting to back up the old stuff), I’ve lost most of what I need to update. Please, if you have any information on things I need to change, email it to me again. The address is: maps at that domain name at the top.
The reason that I’m not actually typing the address out properly is that between spam emails, junk comments on here and the continuing hassles with the ranking site, I’m losing about an hour a day.

I’m going to shut down comments to non-registered users just to try to cut this down.

Registrations on UKWRS are now re-enabled

I’ve just re-enabled the registration page on UKWRS. Hopefully the new code in it will stop the glut of bogus sites that have been trying to register on it. I’ve backed up all the files and the database, just in case!

Where is this?

Terry Burdett says:

“… I have been trying to identify a canal with a small town and a waterside park somewhere in the Midlands but to no avail. We were on a journey (driving) from Shugborough Hall to Cambridge and we stopped there for a picnic lunch. Could I possibly send you a rough map, drawn from memory to see if you could help? We enjoyed the time there so much and would like to return.”

Handily, he provides a sketch map:

Does anyone have any ideas about it?

Hooray, everything is back to normality.

And, I’ve learned the importance of proper backups.

Keep Calm And Carry On

This week has seen a serious problem with the UKWRS database.

My hosting providers are doing their best to restore the information as fast as they can.

When the database comes back, new registrations will be disabled for a while, until some problems are sorted.

Also, a new rule will be that I will be sending you emails about important news (like things breaking and going wrong). I’ll kill off the yahoogroups Group and just do it myself. If you don’t want the emails, then please unsubscribe from the whole thing.

Edit: I’ve just noticed that the entry below this one is about accidentally deleting databases. To clarify matters: No I didn’t delete it by mistake. So there.
